Torture, Not Culture - Female Genital Mutilation
.... armed guards were. Being the daughter of a Somolian
general, she was always escorted by guards. Despite her mother's promise
of gifts, they did not stop at a store, but at a doctor's home. "This is
your special day," Soraya's mother said. "Now you are to become a woman,
an important woman." She was ushered into the house and strapped down to
an operating table. A local anesthetic was given but it barely blunted the
pain as the doctor performed the circumcision. Soraya was sent home an
hour later. Soraya broke from her culture's confining bonds at the age of
18 by running away from an abusive arranged marriage. In Switzerland, she

For The White Man, Of The White Man, And By The White Man
.... Jefferson, having slaves himself, recognized the fact that he could
not free the slaves himself in that document. It was difficult enough
for him to get the Declaration approved by all of the colonies in itself.
In fact the last man to sign the Declaration of Independence did not do so
until the year 1778. The slaves were kept in ignorance of any knowledge
which might have led to their freedom. Laws forbade reading and writing
for slaves. They also forbade anyone to teach a slave to read. To keep
the slaves obedient, slaveholders often made an example of a slave by
beating him with the cow skin, or even killing him. "He[Gor .....

Gangs
.... and my homeboy (who's Latino) just
because we weren't white.
Another one would belong to the punks. Which I do not have a
problem with. The only two punk gangs I know of, do not call themselves
"Gangs" but they call themselves a crew. They call themselves CFH,
(Cowboys From Hell) and the other one is the Martians.
A lot of the gang members come from broken homes, or something is
wrong. So the kids end up in gangs doing drugs, drinking, smoking,
committing crimes, and getting into violence. Some of us consider our
gang "family." Some of the gangs actually do have real families in them.
There's the prob .....

Child Abuse
.... of degree:
the degree to which a parent uses inap-propriate or excessive control strategies
with a child and/or fails to provide standards of care giving. In fact, abusive
parents often do not know they are abusive. Our culture has, for generations,
used corporal punishment as a means of controlling child behavior. Some parents
think society places no restraint on such techniques. Many may recall the old
saying, "spare the rod and spoil the child." It is not always clear what the
limits are in efforts to get a child to behave. The best way to stop the child
abuse and stop the abusive parents from abusing their children is by f .....

College Fraternities
.... were permanent. Then, in 1825, the Kappa Alpha Fraternity (now Kappa
Alpha Society) was born at Union College. Two years later, Sigma Phi and Delta
Phi had been founded at the same college, constituting the so-called Union
Triad which was, in a large measure, the pattern for the American Fraternity
system. By the end of the nineteenth century there were over thirty general
fraternities in this country (pg. 18).
Today's fraternities still have all the characteristics and precepts of
the their past fraternities: "the charm and mystery of secrecy, a ritual, oaths
of fidelity, a grip, a motto, a badge, a background of high idea .....

Gangs
.... things that are strongly against
their morals.
One of the ways that kids morals are bent so that gang violence
becomes more acceptable is the influence of television and movies. The
average child spends more time at a TV than she/he spends in a classroom.
Since nobody can completely turn off their minds, kids must be learning
something while watching the TV. Very few hours of television watched by
children are educational, so other ideas are being absorbed during this
period of time. Many shows on television today are extremely violent and
are often shown this from a gang's perspective. A normal adult can see
that this .....

Controlling Relationships
.... even when you know it
is bad for you. A "bad" relationship is not the kind that is going through the
usual periods of disagreement and disenchantment that are inevitable when two
separate people come together. A bad relationship is one that involves
continual frustration; the relationship seems to have potential but that
potential is always just out of reach. In fact, the attachment in such
relationships is to someone who is "unattainable" in the sense that he or she is
committed to someone else, doesn't want a committed relationship, or is
incapable of one. Bad relationships are chronically lacking in what one or both

Gender Differences
.... of
trying to look better than them. I am rather more concerned of my own
health and ways to improve it. I was really surprised when they told me
that other girls are the ones who usually criticize or pressure them.
When I was aware of this, I did notice, at times, while walking around
casually with my girl friends, when they weren't looking appropriate,
would get stares, hisses or comments from other females. I was even
surprised when I heard my girlfriends talking about other girls right in
front of me, even though most of these times I didn't notice anything
wrong or different about the other girls they were talking about. .....

Different Images Of The Wife Between Sixteenth Centuries And Today
.... support her life, then she couldn't live
only herself. Oppositely, many wives have their new style of life today. They
don't need their husband to support their life. They can take care themselves.
In article "Men, women more confused about roles" , Lillian is an example, "
When her marriage ended, she returned to work but would prefer to return full
time to mothering." 2 , who doesn't need her husband to support her life.
The second different image is that many husbands married their wife
just for love in the sixteenth centuries. In " The Taming of the shrew" Lucentio
loved Bianca very much, so that he disguised as a t .....

African American Vs. Caucasian Americans
.... differences. There are a number of differences between the churches of
African Americans and Caucasians. At most typical African American churches
there are no true sermons. The African American churches tend to do more
entertaining rather than teaching. They also do a great deal of singing and
dancing involved in there praising of God. They emphasize fellowship in their
churches especially after church when they all gather and close the celebration
with a meal together. However at a typical Caucasian church there are a few
differences. To start it off when you first walk in you get a program detailing
what will be ha .....

Homeless: What Has Been Done To Decrease The Problem?
.... to
the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability,
widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his
control.
This is a step in the right direction. However, this is not
enough. These rights are subject to the discretion of the government of
the country who decides to obey these universal rights. How much is
"adequate"?
The government, both at the federal and municipal levels, is
currently working on new spending cuts. These cuts also include spending
on welfare, unemployment and social services that are geared towards
helping the homeless. Spending cuts can be seen as a .....

Dragons In America
.... too dangerous to live in.
A very obvious monster in America is a criminal. Americans fear burglars,
rapists, and killers in their own cities and states. They are feared because
their victims are people like themselves and are victimized in very familiar
places to the average American. That is why people protect themselves with
security systems and weapons. Criminals are feared mainly because their victims
are random. People never feel completely safe knowing that they may be the next
victim.
Besides fear of monsters that pose physical threats, there are monsters
in politics that scare people as well. Corrupt politicians are fe .....
