Animal Rights
.... safety’ of items ranging from eye shadow to oven cleaner. The eye irritancy test described above is only one of the tests that convince me that animal product testing is absolutely wrong. A lethal dose test force-feeds animals a particular chemical in order to see how toxic it is. It may also be injected under the skin, into a vein, or into the lining of the abdomen; mixed into lab chow, inhaled through a gas mask or introduced into the eyes, rectum, or vagina. Experimenters observe the animals’ reactions, which can include convulsions, labored breathing, diarrhea, constipation, skin eruptions, and bleeding from the eyes .....

Freedom In The United States
.... desire for freedom now when he says, "I do not need my freedom when I'm dead. I cannot live on tomorrow's bread." He recognizes the need for freedom in its entirety without compromise or fear.
I think Langston Hughes captures the essence of the American immigrants' quest for freedom in his poem, "Freedom's Plow." He accurately describes American's as arriving with nothing but dreams and building America with the hopes of finding greater freedom or freedom for the first time. He depicts how people of all backgrounds worked together for one cause: freedom.
I selected Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 .....

Accusations By The Media
.... brother" persona I mean that they bullied us into believing what they believed. First we were supposed to be angry and horrified that something like this could happen in such a small town. Then we kind of felt sorry that these two young gentlemen were almost driven to do this because of the years of social abuse they endured all throughout highschool. And finally, in what I find the most sickening part of all, the media turned and pointed its finger at the parents of the perpetrators.
Why do we need to have the focus continually changing? I appreciate the fact that the media's strongest resource is the collision of differ .....

Sexual Discrimination
.... to prove their worth by making money; and men's confusion over what it means to be a man today.
There are many stereotypes about men and women that are heard every day. The most common, however, is how men are considered jerks. That is one of the most popular ideas in our society today. Women have come to accept this idea as an excuse or answer to their problems with the opposite sex. How do they get this idea? It is unknowingly slipped into women's subconscious by a variety of forces. One of the strongest forces, however, is the media. "The complaints about men, the idea that "men are jerks" have become so integrated i .....

False Advertising
.... generation it was normal to crucify and analyze interracial relationships. My generation is different because interracial relationships are of the norm and there is more of a chance to find someone who believes there is nothing wrong with them then to find someone who does. Only those of Demotts' generation look at advertisements of today and see something wrong. Many things have changed in the past ten years and my peers and I have changed with them. For our generation so many things that others might find shocking or bizarre are only the norm to us.
Some of the shocking or bizarre actions that are more normal actions to our ge .....

Status Quo And Change In The Late 1800’s To Early 1900’s
.... steel mills and factories, with a rate of growth that began to attract laborers from around the world. This industrial miracle created huge fortunes, and the relatively equal wealth of the early 1800’s gave way to the fabulous wealth of the Rockefellers, Carnegies, and Vanderbilts. It fueled massive immigration, and changed the demography of the country from a predominately English to a mixed population, that changed the culture and values of the country.
At the same time, most people who had “arrived” economically attempted to maintain the status quo by looking back to the social forms of earlier times. People imitated .....

Is Television Good Or Bad?
.... (otherwise life itself would be entertaining!)
I think that these programs should not be shown. Comedy programs, however, make viewers laugh, feel better, and make people generally happier. These programs should be encouraged, instead of the ‘real life’ dramas. Sports programs and broadcasts of sporting matches are very good. With them, fans of the sports can watch only parts of a match, or watch while they are at work. Without these services, people who are ill or disabled or people that had to work on weekends would miss out on sport all together. These programs show only relevant parts of the match and often include .....

Television Born Killers
.... life. The experiments done in this field are all controlled. They do not correlate with real life problems. While these experiments support the argument, many do not live up to good empirical research. Cumberbatch (1989) examined the main methodological problems he felt were evident in many major studies of the relationship between television violence and aggression.
He focused on five areas that cause problems and question the validity of certain studies. Firstly, researchers have difficulty in handling non significant results. They tend to ignore these and focus only on significant findings which can lead to false conclusi .....

Homeless Youths
.... depression as a result of leaving familiar places and people, and may fall behind academically as they miss school. Children who have to keep moving have no sense of roots, personal space, or possesions. Most see life as temporary, and are restless and leaving projects half finished. Nearly all cling to their few possesions and can be agresive trying to claim something for themselves. Because they lack control in other areas of their lives, nearly all of the kids will literally fight for control at school. School is just one of the many places homeless kids have trouble in, but maybe the most costly.
Homeless youth face .....

The American Dream
.... wear, drive, and think. Advertisers start this form of brainwashing on us at a very early age. They lay the groundwork of ideals early on because it is easy to persuade a child. Now, with the two income family, children are left to interpret not only advertisements but television programming as well without supervision. Children are forced to make their own evaluations and most of the time they go along with the views of what they see. How many times do children want something because they saw it on television? With the unending viewing of shows and advertisements who could blame them. By age twenty, Americans have viewed an est .....

Progressivism
.... disorder as the central problems, fought for immigration restriction, the abolition of prostitution and saloons, and other social-control strategies.
Like the movement itself, the progressives comprised a diverse lot, aligned in shifting coalitions that might unite on one issue, then divide on another. The native-born Protestant middle class, including the new white-collar professionals, was certainly central, but on issues affecting the welfare of factory workers and slum dwellers, the urban-immigrant political machines-and workers themselves-provided critical support. Even corporate leaders at times helped to shape business .....

The Enlightenment
.... Bacon, Galileo, Descartes, Leibnitz, Isaac Newton, and John Locke--who had developed fruitful methods of rational and empirical inquiry and had demonstrated the possibility of a world remade by the application of knowledge for human benefit. The philosophes believed that science could reveal nature as it truly is and show how it could be controlled and manipulated. This belief provided an incentive to extend scientific methods into every field of inquiry, thus laying the groundwork for the development of the modern social sciences.
The enlightened understanding of human nature was one that emphasized the right to self- .....
