The Effect Of The Greek Culture On Other Cultures
.... times. His
mathematical theories of geometry had a vast effect on modern culture and
knowledge.
Another area that was greatly effected was government. The Greeks
were the first civilization to develop a democracy. Cleisthenes divided
Athens into smaller neighborhoods called demes. Each of these
neighborhoods were guaranteed spots on the Council of Five Hundred. The
representatives for these spots were chosen at random forma list of
qualified citizens. The Council elected ten generals to run the city. The
commander-in-chief, also elected annually, was the head of the generals.
Without this first democracy, the idea of democr .....

Inequality Of The Sexes
.... money with power, the
person bringing home the money had the power. The man often makes the f
inal decision on all household matters because he has the money.
The workplace is another place where men and women are not equal.
The most obvious sign starts at the top. Look at CEOs of corporation; the
majority of which are men. Women serving as CEOs are a rare sight. Another
sign of the unfairness can also be found in the lower ranks. Men are often
applauded for being assertive and giving orders. By giving orders, men are
taking a leadership role. Demonstrating leadership ability is a quality
that employers often look for. On .....

Prejudice
.... prejudice myself, and have been hurt by it, I try
to avoid treating other people that way. Especially in sports, I try to
give everyone a chance to prove themselves. Being the object of prejudice
was very stressful for me, but I try to set up my own teams or play hard on
whatever team I am on and have fun anyway.
Prejudice is a hurtful way of treating people differently because
of their unique qualities rather than giving them a chance to prove
themselves. Sometimes people respond by trying harder to prove themselves,
but other people just give up. In sports, if you donąt give some people a
chance, you might lose a good pro .....

What Is Welfare?
.... about 4 million of 10 million eligible households receive federal
rental assistance of any kind (Long 29).
In the essay, “A Nation of Welfare Families,” Stephanie Coontz
discusses her belief that all families in American history have depended on
the legislative, judicial, and social structures set up by the government
(Coontz 994). The suburban family of the 1950s was far more dependent on
government assistance than any so-called underclass family of today (Coontz
995). Federal GI benefit payments, available to forty percent of the male
population between the ages twenty and thirty-four, permitted a whole
generation o .....

Sex In Black, White And Mulatto
.... their owner's demands.
For some slaves the only way they could resist the advances of an
oncoming sexual predator was through resistance. Such an example is Jermain
Loguen's mother. When attacked, "she picked up a stick and dealt her would-
be rapist a blow that sent him staggering. She stood her ground even as he
rebounded with a knife, and finally she knocked him out cold."3 The
punishment for such aggressive actions though often involved a whip, a
slave auction or a bullet to the head. Another reason some enslaved women
would fight this sexual aggression was to protect their reputation among
male slaves. Few men felt c .....

The Increasing Prison Population
.... industries. Some companies
manage entire prisons, while others specialize in particular operations
such as health or food services. And manufacturers prosper when they
provide the many additional necessary items, from uniforms and bedding to
surveillance and monitoring equipment.
If current trends continue, the prison population will increase rapidly in
the next decade. Even without growth, the current prison population would
still be much more expensive to maintain in the future.
Offenders who are in prison for drug-related crimes are more likely to have
serious health problems. The prison population is also aging. These trends

Monks And Today's Society
.... also used to make the monks humble and not proud.
In the modern day United States the dominant values are more along
the line of selfishness. It seems, for the most part, that the main values
in today's American society are, fulfilment of desires, and a rebelling
type lifestyle. Greed can be seen everywhere one turns; everyone is in
competition with others to see who can get the best clothes, biggest house,
or nicest car. It is a society based on more of "what can I have", than
"what can I give." Also, everyone has desires, but it seems like today
people will try to fulfill their own desires no matter whom they hurt. If

Poverty
.... and danger-threat. One might
gather that the word crisis is bad, but it could also relate to a good
situation. What the word crisis is trying to say is that it is a dangerous
situation where there is opportunity at the same time. People who are in a
crisis must evaluate their situational priorities and the available
opportunities.
Karl Marx might argue "capitalism would inevitably cause the
expansion of the lumpenproletariat"(Kornblum 235). Luck plays a major part
in capitalism. The more often one examines their situation, they are more
likely to improve their personal gain. I believe that luck is where
opportunity me .....

The Art Of Reasoning
.... terrified into silence.
This method has been much more successful than the method of tenacity
historically. For most people, this is the method that they use to fix
their beliefs, so long as they don't mind being intellectual slaves.
However, the state/church cannot regulate every opinion, and of course
people from other countries/cultures/religions who hold contrary beliefs
may influence public opinion.
3. A Priori Method
Since the two above methods are inadequate, why not have reason determine
our beliefs?
This method fails for several reasons. It fails because what our reason
tells us to believe is not necessarily consiste .....

Entertainment During The Renaissance
.... and Lope de Vega(Sarah Howarth, 19-21, John Brown
173-219). William Shakespeare was an excellent author, he experimented
with all the rules of theater by combining tradegy and comedy(Sarah
Howarth, 21). Shakespeare was associated with two obsessions Change and
changeability and playing the world on stage(John Brown, 173).
The theaters themselves were a beautiful sight. The stage was set
on one side of the circular building. The other three sides had seats.
There was also a tower called the “tiring room” where the actors could go
and change or rest. There was a flag on top of the tower, when it raised
the stage was set. .....

couch, their response level will be very different than it would be in an
empty room with a two way mirror. Not only will their awareness level be
raised, they may be more concerned in the changed viewing environment and
less on the television programs. In a person's home they may watch TV with
a high or low awareness level for the program. Some people choose to watch
TV just as a background noise while others may be quite into the program.
Due to these different levels of awareness it is hard to see what people
get out of TV in a controlled setting. It is just very hard to isolate TV
from other variables.

Why People Feel Gun Control Is Unfair
.... of handguns. It is also argued that by making it difficult
for guns to be bought and registered for the American public there is a
threat to the personal safety of American families everywhere.
However controlling the sale and distribution of firearms is
necessary because of the homicide rate involving guns. In 1988 there were
9000 handgun related murders in America. Metropolitan centers and some
suburban communities of America are setting new records for homicides by
handguns. Larger Metropolitan centers have ten times the murder rate of
all Western Europe. For example in Washington,D.C. there was an estimated
400 .....
