Pyramids
.... Djoser's chief architect for his pyramid was Imhotep. It is
thought that King Djoser's stone tomb started out having the standard shape of a
mastaba. Then, as construction progressed, a concept evolved. Imhotep began to
place one flat-topped stone structure atop another until he had created six
steps by which the king could ascent to the heavens after death. The Egyptians
had a firm belief in an afterlife and viewed their pharaohs as gods. These
beliefs were a strong force that led to the piling up of stones to such a
monumental scale. The Step Pyramid rose to a height of 204 feet; later pyramids
increased in height as the .....

Socrates
.... and kinship in mere men." Parents blamed the lack of respect for elders on
Socrates. In truth Renault says that he was only giving them guidance so that
they may guide themselves and be free of petty problems. This guidance and
advice caused these young men to re-think their attitudes. Indeed Alexias,
Xenophon, and especially Plato were all changed by Socrates. They loved
Socrates like a mother or father: pp. 392, "In a word," said Xenophon, "We love
him." This love for Socrates was often misinterpreted as love being lost for
family, through argument. Parents were so afraid of losing children to him they
made laws. O .....

Global Warming
.... a number of human activities such as fossil fuel
combustion, waste disposal in landfills, the use of a refrigerator,
numerous agricultural and industrial activities, and the cutting down of
numerous forests.
These human practices have already changed the chemical make up of the
atmosphere. Between the pre-industrial times and today, we have seen the
concentration of carbon dioxide rise 30% in some regions, in particular
the northern hemisphere, human practices have increased concentrations of
aerosols in atmosphere, which is a traditional form of air pollution),
which tends to cool the atmosphere.
With all these gases in the ai .....

Socrates' Moral Decision To Not Escape
.... but he would betray the examples he was trying to set to his followers.
The impact of Socrate's teachings on the world were greatly increased by
his decision. Socrates had no education, therefore none of his own teachings
were ever written. His followers have carried on his messages and lessons into
later times. Would Socrate's teachings really have been carried on at all if he
hadn't followed through?
The impact of his teachings would have been greatly lessened had he
escaped. All the lessons of "virtue" and "courage" would have been taught by a
hypocritical man. Socrates was brave enough to face that sentence with .....

The Shield Of Achilles
.... helmet for
Achilles. The armor he forges is indestructible and worthy of a god. Through
Homer's description of the shield and how it is forged, the reader can begin to
understand the importance and value of this device in a literary context.
The two cities depicted on the shield represent a city in Greece and
Troy. One of the cities is filled with men dancing and singing and brides
marching through the streets, while the other is circled by an army. This army
has two plans which split their ranks: to share the riches which they have
captured or plunder the city and capture more. Turmoil surrounds each city. In
one a quarrel breaks .....

"HOME TECH": The Inner Workings
.... squeezed all
over your sink and faucets? Does your spouse never ever roll down the
tube and continually squeezes it in the middle? Then the toothpaste pump
is for you!
When you press the button it pushes an internal, grooved rod down the tube.
Near the bottom of the rod is a piston, supported by little metal flanges
called "dogs", which seat themselves in the grooves on the rod. As the
rod moves down, the dogs slide out of the groove they're in and click into
the one above it. When you release the button, the spring brings the rod
back up carrying the piston with it, now seated one notch higher. This
pushes one-notch' .....

Hypnotism
.... least not completely. Not according to the
scientific community at least. My sources for this statement are The World
Book Encyclopedia, The Wizard from Vienna: Franz Anton Mesmer, Applied
Hypnosis: An Overview, American Medical Journal, and Hypnosis: Is It For
You? Although they state it in different ways they all basically agree
that nobody can give a very accurate definition or description of hypnosis,
or hypnosis. Although some may get the definition partly correct, the
chances of doing so completely are very, very low. So although I will
probably not be able to give a totally accurate account of hypnosis and
its workings, I wi .....

Immortal Poetry
.... into the
future? In this brief essay, I will investigate the immortal
characteristics of poetry written between 1794 and 1919. And, I will show
that these classical poems can actually hold more relevance today, than
they did in the year they were written. Along the way, we will pay close
attention to the style of the poetry, and the strength of words and
symbols used to intensify the poets’ revelations.
The World Is Too Much with Us, written by William Wordsworth in 1807 is a
warning to his generation, that they are losing sight of what is truly
important in this world: nature and God. To some, they are one in the same.

Interlingua Is Doomed
.... the world was to reform and decide
to teach its citizens an all new language. The nations that would learn it
the quickest would of course be the industrialized countries with the
resources for good public education, incidentally the very nations that
know and are learning, the international business language-English
An inevitable fact is that the English language is already in the process
of taking over the world through film, TV, popular music not to mention
the Internet. Even more important, English being the international
business language there is a lot of money invested in it and it therefore
has the full support of the co .....

Kent State University Incident
.... University was under the protection² of the
Ohio National Guard. Around noon on that day, students fromed in protest.
They were told to disperse, but refused. The first action of the National
Guard was to release tear-gas grenades upon the masses of students (Guard
Fired in Self Defense). These grenades were marginally successful, and
only caused a temporary retreat. The students then responded by throwing
concrerte, rocks, and everything else they could find. This was the first
of a group of poor decisions that led to the bloody disaster of May 4,
1972 and all of the other problems associated with the disaster (Kent
