Depression Of The 1930s
.... on credit) and high profits
for a few industries, concealed basic problems. Thus the U. S. stock market
crash that occurred in October 1929, with huge losses, was not the
fundamental cause of the Great Depression, although the crash sparked, and
certainly marked the beginning of, the most traumatic economic period of
modern times.
By 1930, the slump was apparent, but few people expected it to continue;
previous financial PANICS and depressions had reversed in a year or two.
The usual forces of economic expansion had vanished, however. Technology
had eliminated more industrial jobs than it had created; the supply of
goods cont .....

The 60s And Freedom
.... used by authors to express these views
are often representative of the two main systems used by youths to help
gain their freedoms. The first approach, taken by the Port Huron Statement
and authors such as Gerzon, Reich, Revel and Gitlin, follows the ideals of
the New Left. The New Left represents youths striving for political change
through cultural means. People are encouraged to work for their ideals. In
contrast, the second approach, taken by Rubin and Didion, reflect the
ideals and mannerisms of the "Be-in" society. The "Be-ins" represent
another group of youths who attempt to gain freedoms through more radical

The Persian Gulf War
.... for defending the Arab emirs from the Iranian Islamic
fundamentalism. The Arab emirs were afraid that the Islamic fundamentalists
would rise against the government and eventually take over the government
as they had Iran against the Shah. Kuwait was also afraid of this and so
they supported the Iraqi Arabs against the Iranian Persians.
2"Iraq",World Book (New York, World Book, 1990), Vol 10, p. 260
The funds that Gulf countries lent to Iraq were used to buy high tech
weapons, high tech weapons that made Iraq one of the largest armies in the
world and a force to contend with. "Ironically much of the money and

The Iran-Contra Affair
.... without serious disagreement.
Select committees of the Senate (11 members chaired by Democrat
Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii) and the house of representatives (15 members,
headed by another Democrat, Lee Hamilton of Indiana) conducted televised
hearings in partnership from May to August. They heard evidence that a few
members of the NSC staff set Iran and Nicaragua policies and carried them
out with secret private operatives and that the contras received only a
small part of the money. Former national security advisor John Poindexter
stated that he personally authorized the diversion of money and withheld
that informa .....

The 1920s And Its Impact
.... on the other hand who had returned from war were
ecpecting to be employed, but not even for their bravery and fighting for
their country could they get a job. Canadian soldiers were surprised at
how difficult it was to get a job. While they were out fighting in WW1,
people who had business relating to military were striking it rich because
of all the military equipment that was needed for the canadian army, for
canadian soldiers who had fought in the war, unemployment was a reality for
them.
During the twenties another discovery led to a rising economy for
Canada, the oil industry struck it rich in turner vally Alberta, wh .....

Destructive Generation: Second Thoughts & The 60s: Years Of Hope - Comparison
.... of an army draftee because he brought a black friend from the army
home while on leave. When the Panther returned to the party, the people
present pretended not to notice that anything had happened. Later, when
misunderstandings occurred between two guests at the party which resulted
in one of them making a racial remark, anger was fueled in the group and
among others who had heard about the event. Collier and Horowitz, when
remarking on their reactions, emphasize that while in ordinary times the
event would not have caused many problems, during the sixties, people
considered it more of a sign that revolution was worthwhile. Per .....

Brief History Of The NRA
.... November of 1993 and was
then signed into law by President Clinton later in the month. The act was
originally named for anti gun lobbyist Sarah Brady, and not for former
press secretary Jim Brady. It was through Jim Brady's support and the
media coverage that linked his name to the act. The act requires that
there be a waiting period of five state government business days at the
time an individual applies to purchase a handgun from a federal firearm
license. During the five day wait, the local sheriff or police chief must
"make a reasonable effort" to see if the purchaser is prohibited from
owning a handgun. The police offic .....

Cooperative Pursuit

thereby increasing your farm production by being able to work at a steady
pace for a longer period of time. Imagine not having to blow out or
relight candles, with the flip of a switch you automatically lighted the
entire house. Electric lighting is not only one of the most common
conveniences, it is the most practical.
Modern day heating compared to the burning of wood or coal is a
very welcomed change in American society. A wood burning stove is now a
thing of the past. Imagine the heating of your entire home with
electricity. Chopping wood, hauling coal, and stok .....

For Another Man's Freedom
.... at the time I
am sure they believed that they were taking part in an inconceivable
historical event. I am sure that at that time they did not realize that
this would be an ongoing struggle even three-hundred years after their
existence. The soldiers entered this battle with great pride, holding
their flags high, hoping to make a difference. They did make a clearly
substantial impact on their society , but this quest for equality is still
being pursued.
This fight was not considered the only option at the time, but
peaceful talks were always considered. As society knows, peace talks are
not always the best way to get th .....

How The 60's Changed Our Lives
.... they
were the dawn of a new society in America. A psychedelic society, almost
utopian, in which love would be everywhere and people would help each other.
(O'Neill 127)
Drugs were very quickly associated with the hippies. You could
often see people smoking marijuana on sidewalks, in parked cars, in
doughnut shops, or relaxing on the grass of a public park, anywhere
(O'Neill 125). LSD was also very prevalent. Both were to make the user more
aware of reality, and to expand their minds. In an interview, Joyce
Francisco said "Whenever I find myself becoming confused, I drop out and
take a dose of acid. It's a shortcut to real .....

The White Man's Abuse On The Lands
.... Man. He
makes many analogies towards that of the spiritual importance of the burial
grounds and the worshipping grounds towards the after life. "To us the
ashes of our ancestors are sacred and their resting place is hallowed
ground." And he also says, "Your dead cease to love you and the land of
their nativity as soon as they pass the portals of the tomb and wander way
beyond the stars."
In the speech of Sitting Bull, he speaks of the abuse of the land
by the White Man but on a different level then that of Chief Seattle. He
says that the Earth is not ours, not theirs, not anybody's to own. He
cannot understand the concept of havi .....

King's "A Letter From Birmingham City Jail": An Analysis
.... ". . . [he], along with several
members of [his] staff, [are] [there] because [he] was invited [there].
[He] is here because [he] has organizational ties [there].". In other words,
he was there because what he does brought him here, kind of like a job.
In the second paragraph, he becomes crystal clear, by stating that
he is " . . . in Birmingham because injustice is [there].". Not only does
he present why he is there, but he justifies it by alluding to biblical
characters such as "the Apostle Paul", and "Paul" who did the same. Not
only is this a show of intellect, but it is as well an appeal to the senses
of his audience, for .....
