The History Of The Ku Klux Klan
.... In the
beginning, the men wanted to do nothing more than play pranks on people.
However, the people were more frightened than they were cheered up. They
soon realized what they could do with these fear tactics. The South had
turned into a place that was no longer theirs. The slaves were now free
(many of these men were slave owners) and carpetbaggers were coming from
the North to take advantage of the southern people. They saw the
opportunity to set back the South to what it had been. The KKK soon began
to ride through political rallies of the carpetbaggers. People often fled
the rallies out of fear. Word quickly spread across th .....

Labor Unions
.... that a
rather large increase in wages would generate only a small increase in the
price of the product. Third, the supply of factors that can be used as
substitutes for union labor, such as nonunion labor or labor-saving
machinery, should be inelastic, so that their price rises substantially as
more units are employed. Fourth, the ability of these factors to
substitute for union labor should be highly limited; it would be hard to
substitute for workers with very high skil! ls or skills that are highly
specific to a single employer.
Numerous studies have been made to estimate the extent to which unions in
the United States have .....

Roosevelt
.... for the group because of their involvements in the
bloodiest wars of the twentieth century. In this world, blood is a hard
thing to forget about. Which ones, and in what light they'll be remembered
in depends entirely on the biases of historians and the abilities of
governments to cover up the embarrassing moments blemishing the memories of
their leaders. So if the United States is still around and as powerful as
now in five centuries - and hopefully it will - F.D Roosevelt will most
likely be one of the mist breakers from the second world war because of the
American people's great interest in the presidents involved in .....

The New Deal
.... In
the first two years, the New Deal was concerned mainly with relief,
setting up shelters and soup kitchens to feed the millions of unemployed.
However as time progressed, the focus shifted towards recovery. In
order to accomplish this monumental task, several agencies were created.
The National Recovery Administration (NRA) was the keystone of the early
new deal program launched by Roosevelt. It was created in June 1933 under
the terms of the National Industrial Recovery Act. The NRA permitted
businesses to draft "codes of fair competition," with presidential
approval, that regulated prices, wages, working conditions, .....

The New Immigration
.... Until 1899, U.S. immigration officials asked arrivals which nation
they had left, not their religion or ancestry. So oppressed people were
listed under the countries from which they fled. Armenians who escaped
from Turkey were recorded as Turks, and Jews who had been beaten by mobs
in Russia were listed as Russians.
This so called "new immigration" was different in many other ways
from previous immigration. For the first time, Catholic an Jewish
immigrants outnumbered Protestants, and still other arrivals were Muslims,
Buddhists, or Greek or Russian Orthodox church members.
Until 1897, 90 percent of all o .....

The Three Great Compromises
.... of the two houses. The
House of Representatives was based on each state's population, that is the more
people in the state the more representatives that state would get. The Senate
said that regardless of the state's population each state would get two
representatives all with equal say.
The 3/5 Compromise was mainly about slaves. The issue in this compromise
was should slaves be counted for determining representation for each state? The
North did not want them to be counted because they were considered possessions,
not citizens, and that meant less representation for them. The South, on the
other hand, wanted them to .....

Prisoners Of War
.... eye out for one another. They were considered to be "hostages" and were
treated like the enemy.
The concentration camps were not very large but were numerous. They
contained about 500-600 warriors and were divided into groups of under
sixteen, older than sixteen, and of course by gender (Male and Female). 3
This caused many problems with the POWs as they were split from their
families, and in a lot of cases, never saw one another again.
The Prisoners of War were killed by the hundreds as malnutrition and
hygiene eventually caught up with them. They were put to work for lengthy
periods of time, and we treated harshly .....

The Civil War
.... The first state to
secede was South Carolina, on December 20, 1860. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama,
Georgia, and Louisiana followed in January, 1861. Texas then also separated on
February 1st. Three days later on February 4th, 1861, delegates from these
states drafted a constitution for the confederacy. Jefferson Davis, was
proclaimed president on February 18th. This was before Abraham Lincoln himself
even became officially proclaimed President. The war began in 1861, when
confederates open fired on Ft. Sumter, gaining control over the Port of
Charleston. On April 15th, Lincoln then called out 75,000 volunteers determined

The Declaration Of Individualism And The Encouragement Of Protest From Birmingham Jail
.... in which injustices are occurring. In the last sentence of the
excerpt King openly admits that he would protest against established laws or
traditions. King was against the traditional views and unjust laws, which
discriminated against him and his fellow people. He felt that the only way that
these unjust laws and traditional beliefs would ever change would be by means
of protest. He felt that without protest the laws and traditions would remain
the same forever. Along with encouraging protest, King's letter was also a
justification of his actions. The letter was written to his fellow clergymen to
explain his prior ac .....

Rock Music
.... jockey Alan Freed was the one who introduced this music and later gave
it the name of Rock n' Roll. Record companies distributed records played by
whites but composed by blacks. Whites were frustrated because there weren't
any white artists and they didn't want the blacks to be the stars until
Bill Haley appeared with his "Rock Around the Clock". In this decade, Elvis
Presley introduced a music that was sexual suggestive and outraged dull
adults. In time he changed the style of the music by adopting a country and
western style and became a national hero. By the end of this decade and the
start of the next, Rock n' Roll st .....

confronted with a plethora of events both domestic and international. Shortly
after Eisenhower's inauguration, Joseph Stalin (the Soviet Première) died of a
stroke on March 5, 1953, leaving the United States questioning who would rise to
power in Russia and continue the Cold War against the US. Meanwhile, in the
United States, the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare was created on
