Ban Smoking
.... In the August 1995 issue of consumer reports, twenty-
four products were recalled because of possible dangers to the consumer. These
products included a car that may lose a wheel while in motion, a hair dryer that
poses a fire hazard, and cookies that can cause an allergic reaction. (Consumer
Reports, 500) Yet, the sale of cigarettes, known to be unsafe, has never been
prohibited by the government. Why are cigarettes any different from other
products sold in the US.
Cigarettes are not only harmful to users, but are also damaging to all
people in the vicinity of a smoker. Second hand smoke from cigarettes is just as
damaging as .....

"Braces Suck!"
.... Braces are three to four years of physical torture beginning with the
very first office visit. The applying of the brackets itself is long, tiresome,
and uncomfortable. First, cold, flavored clay is shoved into the inside of the
mouth, forming a mold as it dries. Jagged metal squares (brackets) are glued to
the tooth, forcing hot, burning, glue to drip down the gums. Braces also cause
everyday aches and pains in the mouth. Metal wires, guiding teeth to a new shape,
stab the inside of the mouth causing cuts and sores while tearing the linings of
the mouth each time a person's mouth opens. Rubber bands that are strung across

Dreams
.... be born because of lucid dreaming. In a true story taken from
the book called Living with Dreams a woman dreamt that she just had a period in
her dreams. This was so realistic that she actually thought she had a real
period not one dreamt up in a dream. A few days later she had sex thinking that
it was the best time to have sex without becoming pregnant. Two or three weeks
she felt something strange was happening and so consulted a doctor who said that
she had become pregnant. All this happened just because of a dream.
Another dream that caused panic was when a student from university had
just completed a project and all he had .....

The Ebola Virus
.... You are dead
before you have even started to show signs of this virus. It is believed that it
is some sort of mutated form of AIDS because it started in the original spot as
AIDS did, Kinshasa and moved along the highway ripping its way through Northern
Africa. As of now there are an estimated 150 000 people who have died from this
virus. This figure is in Africa alone. In October 1989, monkeys were dying by
the hundreds in a building 2 miles away from the White House. They were
diagnosed as dying from Ebola. Except that this strain of Ebola was not harmful
to humans. It only killed monkeys. If a virus can change its metabolis .....

Psychoanalysis
.... and, using
these theories, telling his patients through interpretations what was going on
inside the unconscious part of their minds, thus making the unconscious become
conscious. Many hysterias were cured this way, and in 1895, Breuer and Freud
published their findings and theories in Studies in Hysteria.
CLASSIC PSYCHOANALYTIC THEORY
Traditional psychoanalytical theory states that all human beings are born with
instinctual drives that are constantly active even though a person is usually
not conscious of thus being driven. Two drives--one for sexual pleasure, called
libido, the other called aggression--motivate and propel most .....

Abilities Of People With Disabilities
.... This is possible because of the courts and the
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission wants to extend protections under
the 1973 Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act to
obese people. In December of 1993 a Federal Appeals Court ruled unanimously
to uphold an order that required the state of Rhode Island to pay $100,000
in damages to a 320-lb. woman for not hiring her and then ordered that she
be hired as an attendant at a mental retardation facility. The EEOC said,
"It is not necessary that a condition be involuntary or immutable to be
covered." In September of 1993, California's Supreme Court ruled that .....

AIDS: Myths And Facts
.... or dirty needles used
by someone who carried the HIV virus. Prostitutes contract and spread AIDS
through sexual activity with several different partners without knowing
their partners' sexual history. This in turn, leads to the spread of the
disease throughout the heterosexual community. Innocent infants are
victims of the disease, born by mothers who are infected with AIDS. It is,
of course, true that homosexuals do spread the disease. However, to label
AIDS a “gay disease” is nothing less than ludicrous.
There are certain precautions that can be taken to control or
prevent the spread of AIDS. For those who are sexually a .....

AZT
.... specifically, AZT, inhibits the reverse transcriptase enzyme, which is
involved in the DNA replication process. When DNA is replicating in a cell,
there is a specific enzyme that works along one side of the original DNA strand
as the DNA is split into two strands, copying each individual nucleotide. This
enzyme is only able to work in one direction along the nucleotide string,
therefore a different enzyme, or rather a series of different enzymes is
required to work in the opposite direction. Reverse transcriptase is one of the
enzymes that is required to work in the opposite direction. AZT works by bonding
to the reverse transcript .....

Cancer: The Costs, Causes, And Cures
.... to fail.
What causes Cancer to become active?
Since it is believed that almost all people have some type of cancer in their
body, (although benign), any person that comes in contact with a carcinogen,
(any cancer-causing agent), will cause these benign cells to become malignant.
It is when the cells become malignant, that cancer actually occurs. Cancer, in
this context, can be caused by many different agents; chemical, biological or
physical.
Chemical Agents
Chemicals that can cause a benign cell to become active include things such as
complex hydrocarbons, aromatic amines, certain metals, drugs, hormones, and

Critical Summary Of Cultural Effects On Eating Attitudes In Israeli
.... increased substantially. People believe
that this increase in eating disorders is due to the fashion industry. The
fashionable female figure of today has become thinner and more tubular
(Szmulker, McCance, McCrone, & Hunter, 1986).
In the world today, Apter believes that thinness is more and more a
symbol of the feminine ideal. He finds that the Western role of a woman is
now beginning to include success in the work force, sexually attractive as
well as the traditional roles as nurturant wives and mothers. Apter
hypothesizes that this added stress of Western ideology combined with the
non-Western ethnic origin of th .....
