18th Century Literature
.... reader is also exposed to the life a man
in the 1660's. A Journal of the Plague Year is an example of historical
fiction. Defoe uses wide ranges of vivid descriptions including
verisimilitudes and imagery, to give the reader a realistic feel of what
took place through the eyes of a witness. This literary time period also
included works from John Dryden, who used elegance and cleverness in his
writings. This period ended about 1700, and enabled a new age of
literature.
In literary history, the first half of the 18th century is known as
the Age of the Pope. In this age, the writers expressed views of the
public and restrained .....

A Comparison Of The Women Of Wharton And Deledda
.... of life's burdens. In this story she is
the conflicting character.
The other woman is a young Mattie Silver, the cousin of Zeena and
the housemaid of the Fromes. Mattie is about twenty-one years old and not
too much of a house keeper since she is small and weak and somewhat clumsy.
But nevertheless she caught the eye of Ethan Frome who would fetch her on
nights of town revelry, and with that grew a forbidden love. This is the
conflict of the story.
In 1920, Grazia Deledda published La Madre. Maria Maddalena is the
mother of the priest who, throughout the book, falls to the wayside under
temptation. She is a very old-fashi .....

A Comparison And Contrast Of The Supernatural's Active Role In The Lives Of
.... in Boston. He later flees to Philadelphia to
escape his brother's rule over him. He relates how he was "dirty",
"fatigu'd", and "Want of Rest" (222).
In these depictions we can see an analogy. These individuals are
removed from their homes and families. Although Benjamin Franklin's
removal was of his own free will. They each suffered as they no longer had
the comforts of which they were accustomed.
Rowlandson's faith was remarkable considering all that she endured.
Through out the narrative she must rely on her faith in God. She
incorporates numerous verses from the Bible to offer explanations for all
that she has su .....

An American Tragedy: Comparing "The Crucible" And "The Scarlet Letter"
.... Letter, but also in The Minister's Black Veil. One might even
say that Hawthorne's ancestry (Hathorne) is what he might consider his own
"Pearl", and this is why he changed his name.
Like Miller's the Crucible, The Scarlet Letter takes place in
Puritan Salem and has a tragic hero, but these are the only similarities
between the two great works.
In Miller's play, the tragic hero is John Proctor, a man whose
pride causes the demise of many women, tried as witches. Had Proctor
chosen to reveal his sin of lechery with Abigail Williams before the
problem got out of hand, he would've saved several women from being han .....

An Analysis Of The Quotation "The Mills Of The Gods Grind Slowly, But They
.... them. Then, in His divine wisdom He responds to these requests
either directly or through other people. Very often, His answers are not
all one would expect. In fact, His reply may be the exact opposite of what
most would think to be best.
Many times people pray to God for something that is not immediately
received. Due to this fact, they lose faith in the prayer process. They
think God has ignored them or is resentful of something that has been done.
“The mills of the gods grind slowly...” could be interpreted as meaning
that God takes His own precious time in answering prayers. The answer will
be “no” if it is .....

An Analysis Of Orwell's "Shooting An Elephant"
.... pictured as a leader because he was
British and he worked for the British Empire. Readers are able to relate
to the fact that he does not want to be humiliated in front of the Burmese.
He declares, “Every white man's life in the East, was one long struggle not
to be laughed at” (101). Orwell compares the elephant to the huge British
Empire, and just as the elephant has lost control, he feels that when the
white man turns tyrant it is his own freedom that he destroys (100).
Secretly he hates the British Empire and is on the side of the Burmese (97).
The elephant is equivalent to the British Empire ravaging through Burma

An Analysis Of Hawthorne's Short Stories
.... plea from her husband, “Look up to heaven, and
resist the wicked one,” (1590) Faith cannot resist the Devil's temptation
and has “uncertain sorrow,” (1587) after submitting to him. The character
of Faith which Hawthorne portrays is one of uncertainty and one which has a
lack of self control. Faith is a good example of how Hawthorne uses a
woman to symbolize a deeper significance, in this case, it is to evoke the
hypocrisy of the Puritan people, that is, Puritans are really not as pure
as we all think, they also contain evil characteristics, in this case,
exploited at night. We cannot justify Hawthorne's usage of Faith as

An Analysis Of British Literature
.... because they believed Grendel was destined to die, and there
was no way to defy destiny. They also did not pity Grendel because they
considered him to be entirely evil because it was his fate. The Anglo-
Saxon's strong belief in fate led to them not fearing death as much as
during other times periods in British Literature. Beowulf's strong belief
in fate was a reflection in the society's pagan belief in fate. Due to the
fact that the society at the time of Beowulf was pagan, they did not
believe in the afterlife.
The Christian revision to Beowulf illustrated a different outlook
on death and the afterlife. When monks .....

An Example Of Good Writing: Zinsser's "Simplicity"
.... stop and go look it up because they do
not know the meaning. This causes the reader to become frustrated and they
also tend to loose interest. There are too many other options presented to
people today that already stray them away from reading.
By asking questions in the essay it keeps the readers attention.
In the essay Zinsser asks, "Who is this elusive creature, the reader?"
That question causes the people reading to stop and think, could he be
talking about me? Now he has captured the readers full attention, so they
read on to find the answer.
Throughout Zinsser's essay he makes many suggestions to the reader
in which he .....

Difficulty In Making An Important Decision
.... new career would also
cause me to lose confidence in myself. These concerns, failure and
financial, and not finding a new job made this decision very difficult.
The decision to choose a new career was an extremely important one. The
sole function of a career is not just to provide a means to make a
living; it should have a larger purpose. The work I was doing did little
for others, and in fact, served only a small, special interest group.
In addition to pursuing a meaningful career, a career should be
satisfying, and make some significant contributions to other people's
lives. Therefore, I choose to become a teacher. It .....

on in the ladies room. Mrs. Sommers is "not going through any acute
mental process or reasoning with herself", she is "not thinking at all" at
this point.
Mrs. Sommers's mind is not working like it used to at the beginning.
All of a sudden nothing is too expensive, she eats the expensive
restaurant, buys shoes, gloves, and magazines "such as she had become
accustomed to read in those days". These things give Mrs. Sommers a
"feeling of assurance, a sense of belonging to the well-dressed multitude".
Now, she is one of those rich important people, an .....
