Bias
.... these interviews could not be viewed
as 100% accurate. One example, is a geographic bias. The people that were
interviewed were only a very small portion of the millions of freed slaves.
Counting the number of slaves interviewed from each state, it was discovered
that there were only 155 interviews from black people living in Virginia,
Maryland, Delaware, Missouri, and Kentucky, which is about 6% of the total
number of published interviews. Twenty-three percent of the southern slave
population lived in those states. In these statistics, the upper-south was
unrepresented.
Another example would be the ages of the ex-slaves int .....

Alice Munro's "Boys And Girls"
.... coming to terms with the role in life that she
was expected to lead. She wanted to work outside with her father doing the work
that she deemed important. The mother tried to get the narrator to work inside
doing work deemed appropriate for a lady, however it was not something she
enjoyed. "I hated the hot dark kitchen in the summer" (p. 530). The narrator
was not considered of any consequential help to her father, simply because she
was female.
"Could of fooled me," said the salesman. "I thought it was only a girl"
(p. 529). Even though the narrator could do more work than her younger brother,
she was still under app .....

The Theme Of Isolation In Various Literature
.... behind the Eskimo saying,
"the wolf keeps the caribou strong." Mowat observed strong family ties among
wolves and he finished his long assignment by having great compassion for them.
And he concluded with the realization that the wolf in fact is very different
from the wolf of a legend.
When the book was published there was no more than 1200 wolves existing.
Compare this to the 2000 the year before. I hope there is still time to prevent
another human error against nature. "the elimination from this planet of a
fellow creature which has at least an equal right to life" {2} I think people
need to look at how we coincide with .....

Carpe Diem: The Golden Chance
.... Spain is a country not very rich, and for a person
like my it would be not very intelligent to reject this great chance. Here I am
trying to learn as much as possible about American life style, culture, language
and people. My chance was supposed to expire in one year but now I have the
opportunity to not only finish high school in United States, but also continue
my college years here.
My Carpe Diem tells me that I can not waste my time, because I have
already lost too much precious time in my life. I have to be resolute to succeed,
to give my best, to enjoy my education and the teachers that are here to help me,
and to give my .....

Characteristics Of The Beowulf Poem
.... since his name is written on one of the folios, Lawrence Nowell, the
sixteenth-century scholar, may have been responsible for Beowulf's
preservation."(Raffel ix) An interesting fact that is unique about the poem is
that "it is the sole survivor of what may have been a thriving epic tradition,
and it is great poetry."(Raffel ix)
The poem was composed and performed orally. "Old English bards, or
scops, most likely began by piecing together traditional short songs, called
heroic lays; they then gradually added to that base until the poem grew to its
present size. The verse form is the standard Old English isochronic: each line

Image Of Child Heros
.... story a young man named
David proposes to the king of Israel that he fight and attempt to kill Goliath,
the giant that had been plaguing Israel. The king agrees, however hesitantly,
and David goes on to slay the beast using just a slingshot. While this story
is not one that was made up, it still shows us that the ancient Hebrews
believed in the fact that a child, or in this case teen, has the will and
motivation to do the impossible.
Staying on the eastern side of the world, we will next see examples of
Russian stories. In the former Soviet Union, a lot of the time stories, books
and other types of art were hard t .....

Compare And Contrast: Aneas And Turnus
.... his life to the establishment of Latium. As the greatest of all
warriors, Aneas displays his superb strength and his leadership capabilities, by
guiding the Trojans to victory over the latins and establishing Latium. The
selflessness of Aneas and his devotion to the Gods, enables him to leap over and
break through any obstacles that obstruct his destiny. Patterned after Homer's
Hector, Virgil's Turnus is also a courageous and devout hero. As the most
handsome of Rutilians, Turnus' nobility reflects his physical appearance; he is
a god-fearing, libation-bearing soldier. Turnus was greatly admired and
respected by his subjects: " .....

Similarities In "Miss Jean Brodie", "Dead Poets Society", And "The Trial And Death Of Socrates"
.... This is another case of needless persecution of someone with the best
of intentions. It is ridiculous to think that he could have been implicated in
any way to the suicide of one of his students. Firing Professor Keating was the
biggest disservice that the administration could have done to the student body.
The most extreme case of this senseless persecution is that of Socrates.
Here is a man of little means. His only desire was to try to enlighten others,
as well as himself. Was this not a noble cause? His demeanor was rough at
times, but his intentions were still pure. How can you punish, much less put to
death, .....

Compare And Contrast: "Dune" By Herbert And "Star Wars" By Lucas
.... Vladmir is related to him, he is his uncle. He also
starts to learn about a powerful force from someone close to him, his mother.
Similarly, in Star Wars the main character is a teenage boy, whose father was
killed by the evil Darth Vader, whom he must confront. Darth Vader also turns
out to be related to the main character, his father. He also gets his first
teachings in the force from someone close to him, the man that was like an uncle
to him.
In Dune, all the space flights and cargo transportation were done by the
secretive Guild, who don't reveal their identity to anyone. However, in Star
Wars anybody who can buy a sp .....

Compare And Contrast: "Dead Poets Society" And "Day Of The Last Rock Fight"
.... murdered the bully. And in “Dead Poets Society” it was because
of pressure from the family. The father wanted him to be something that he
didn't want for himself. The similarity is that all of these deaths could have
been prevented by listening to each other and talking to each other.
And finally there were similarities and differences in the activities
they were into. The two stories differ because in “Dead Poets Society” the
students snuck out to read poetry and in “Day of the Last Rock Fight” they went
off to have rock fights. The poetry in “Dead Poets Society” was harmless, it
couldn't hurt anyone, but in the rock fights so .....

Comparing Henry David Thoreau And Herman Melville's Writings
.... human life. They explore the powers and influences of nature over mankind.
However, Melville centers his point of view upon mankind in conflict with
nature's forces, while Thoreau believes that if mankind experiences nature, we
will envelope ideas which will teach mankind to live harmoniously in our natural
environment; in turn, allowing individuals to reach the highest levels of
achievement synergistically with nature.
In Moby Dick, Herman Melville illustrates man's quest to attain the
supreme power of God through the monomaniacal Captain Ahab. Captain Ahab is
obsessed with the desire to destroy Moby Dick, his neme .....
