Hills Like White Elephants: Jig
.... realizes she needs to change, but only goes that far. She does walk
to the end of the station and looks upon the fertile side of the valley and
comments "and we could have all this," but she continues drinking when she
knows well that she carries a child in her womb. She even says the alcohol
tastes like licorice, that everything tastes the same, and she's getting tired
of her same old life. Surely, she must know the possible damage she can cause
the baby to have, but does it stop her from drinking? No, this only indicates
that she is still not ready to change completely. Even though she wants to
change, something, perhaps her o .....

The Sacrilege: Caesar A Political Mastermind
.... Caesar is known for being "reckless." He recounts the story of the
pirates that captured him. Also in that conversation, Decius puts down Caesar
because he says that Caesar has no money and that even as Pontifex Maximus, he
still doesn't have any money. So he thinks less of Caesar when Milo tells him
about a huge loan from Crassus to Caesar because he couldn't pay off his debts.
Decius starts to gain respect for Caesar when he makes the announcement,
as Pontifex Maximus, to label the "heinous" crime a "sacrilege." Caesar walks
so seriously and confidently people "lose their stony faces" when Caesar arrives.
Although when Caes .....

Fyodor Dostoyevsky's The House Of The Dead
.... of Dostoyevsky's personality and
attitudes through these years. In his first year in prison, Dostoyevsky “found
myself hating these fellow-sufferers of mine.” (305) His first day in prison,
several convicts approached him, a member of the noble class and no doubt very
wealthy in the convicts' eyes, and asked him for money four times each; and
each refusal seemed to bring more convicts. He quickly grew to spite these
people, for they thought him to be an idiot, unable to remember that the very
same convict had approached him for money not fifteen minutes earlier. (67-8)
But, Dostoyevsky makes a startling realization at the en .....

.... magic" that caused some kind of trouble. Every time
something bad happened they would blame it on witches and witchcraft.
Main Characters: One of the main characters in this story was Tituba, an
African slave woman from Barbados. She was purchased in Barbados by a merchant
named Samuel Parris. She lived in Barbados until Samuel Parris brought her to
Salem to work as his servant. She was known to practice Obeah, an African cult
sorcery. People who performed or practiced Obeah were said to be able to
predict the future, make magical charms, and drive away evil spirits. Tituba

The Different Conceptions Of The Veil In The Souls Of Black Folk
.... a
veil"Footnote2, is a allusion to Saint Paul's line in Isiah 25:7, "For now we
see through a glass, darkly."Footnote3 Saint Paul's use of the veil in Isiah and
later in Second Corinthians is similar to Du Bois's use of the metaphor of the
veil. Both writers claim that as long as one is wrapped in the veil their
attempts to gain self-consciousness will fail because they will always see the
image of themselves reflect back to them by others. Du Bois applies this by
claiming that as long as on is behind the veil the, "world which yields him no
self-consciousness but who only lets him see himself through the revelation of

The Killer Angels
.... a great depiction of the tragedy of
war, like in the part when Armistead races into battle, even though he is
fighting his best friend (Hancock), and they both get shot. It really shows the
views of each side, and what each character felt.
The Killer Angels' will satisfy both the history buff and the Civil War
buff. But, the sense of duty, honor, and the appalling loss of life as well as
the unbelievable heroism displayed by both sides in the battle will move many
readers.
The Killer Angels Summary
This outstanding historical novel depicts four days at Gettysburg,
Pennsylvania which occur during summer of 1863. These crucial .....

The Handmaids Tale
.... they accepted it. They were afraid and the
Sons gave them some security. Because they accepted the first few laws, it was
hard to refuse to not go along with the ones that followed.
When the women were finally stripped of their identities, they felt as
though they had deserved it because they had done nothing to try and save any of
their other rights.
"We looked at one anothers faces and saw dismay, and a certain shame, as if wed
been caught doing something we shouldnt. Its outrageous one woman said, but
without belief. What was it about this that made us feel we deserved it?"(p.

Hester Prynne Sanction
.... to be society's manner with which
we punish criminals. This is an interesting case though, because corporations
don't simply have one individual they can place the blame upon. Rather, they are
comprised of hundreds or even thousands of people, and therefore there is no
extensive punishment prosecutors can place upon everybody who is employed by a
corporation. In a famous case in Indiana involving Ford Pinto whose “cost
benefit analysis regarding the redesign of the gas tank on the Pinto” cost a
person his life. The firm ended up paying $200,000, but how can you place a
price on human life? And furthermore, who can you go after f .....

In Cold Blood: Summary
.... as bad as Dick but yet he still struck me as having a bad character for
what he did to the family. It took me awhile to get a good impression of Perry.
Perry was a really nice guy and I think that he just got mixed in with the wrong
crowd. At the beginning, when they first started to kill all of the family
members, they had them tied up and Perry didn't want to kill the family but he
thought that if he acted like he was gonna kill Mr. Clutter then Dick would stop
him. Then they would let them all go but when Dick didn't stop him Perry became
a mad man and went ahead and killed the whole family. Later at the gallows Perry

The Insanity Plea By Winslad And Ross: Summary
.... streets because of the verdict. Before hand he was elected
a Supervisor and resigned because he didn't like the way that Politics worked.
The point before, that I may not have mentioned, is that the defense argued
that he was insane and that "a person with a normal background who was brought
up in a good home, something is obviously missing." Since he was being charged
on 3 accounts of Murder in the 1st, they somewhat bought the insane defense so
they lowered his charges to 1 account of voluntary manslaughter, where he
received 7 years and 8 months with a possibility of parole after 5 years.
In the summer of 1978, Lyman .....

The Right To Privacy By Robert Bork.
.... on condoms. Bork felt that Douglas's liberal use of penumbras to
create a zone of privacy was an excessive use of judicial power. Bork feels a
judge must follow the Constitution and should not imply anything from the
various ideas in the Constitution. This poses problems when trying to deal with
cases that the Constitution does not specifically mention. For example, without
the ability to interpret some of the various amendments in the constitution it
would be virtually impossible for a judge to decide cases dealing with the on-
line world. Is an on-line service provider similar to a magazine publisher
