finds out early that Arthur Dimmesdale is the man Hester is trying to
protect.
One notices, that even in the beginning, there is deep inner
conflict affecting Dimmesdale. On the scaffold stands his parishioner, and
his lover, Hester. She is publicly paying for her sin of adultery, and
although she has the opportunity, she does not reveal Dimmesdale to the
public. Dimmesdale is lost. He wants to confess, but he is scared. He is
a clergyman. How would the public view him? Would they look at hi .....

Norris' "McTeague": Themes
.... it with the gold he felt his life was not worth living. Trina
shows how greedy she is when she wins the 5,000 in the lottery. She will
not spend any money where it is needed, and because of this the couples
standards of living decline. Although Trina and Zerkows' greed for riches
was almost identical, Zerkow is vied as a lost soul, yet Trina is viewed
as a proper young lady. This is one of the things that leads to her death
and the downfall of McTeague. McTeague shows that he is greedy also after
Trina wins the money. He wants to control the money as if it belongs to
him. In a way greed also drives Marcus who feels like Trina .....

Later, the narrator of the story says:

that to go to prison would bring greatness to them, these are those who
would go to prison not caring if it brought greatness to them or not. But

This further shows John Kumalo as a selfish man, acting for his own
good rather than the good of the people which he claims to represent. John
Kumalo, as a result of living in the city, becomes a self-centered person
more concerned about money and political power .....

Mr.Dussel was a Jewish dentist that picked on Peter van Daan for every
little thing. He wasn't a very religious Jew, but he still wore the blue
star.
Mr.Kraler was one of the people that helped them survive in the lonely
attic. He with Koophuis was sent to the camps with the Jews for housing
them. They both miraculously survived the camps.
Mr.Koophuis was the manager of the building occupying the group of Jews. As
I already mentioned, he went to the camps with the Jews. He was sick a lot
and was always on the edge of death.
Miep and Eli also helped the families by getting them food and supplies.

.... he was silent when the Jewish people needed him most, he still is
reluctent to say that no God exists. Afterwards though, he does recite the
words of the Kaddish.
"Some talked of God, of his mysterious ways, of the sins of the Jewish
people, and of their future development, but I have ceased to pray. How I
sympathised with Job! I did not deny God's existence, but I doubted His
absolute justice." (p. 57)
Again he talks about the way how he doesn't deny God's existence
but he only says at a time like this one, God should be helping.

State and the Party. The telescreens attempt to control the intellect and
emotions of its citizens. The telescreens prove the emotional loyalty to
Big Brother, who alone has the power to create and to destroy anyone he
wants. The people know that every move they make is being constantly
watched by the telesceens and if committing a thoughtcrime they will be
punished immediately.

.... Telemachos stories about Odysseus.
Telemachos continues his search on horseback with Nestor's son Megapenthes.
Telemachos and Megapenthes arrive at and are welcomed into the home
of Menelaos and Helen. Menelaos tells Telemachos of his travels with
Odysseus and that Odysseus is trapped on an island by Calypso. Meanwhile,
Antinoos has learned that Telemachos has e mbarked on his journey and plots
with the other suitors to kill him upon his return to Ithaca. Penelopeia
learns of Telemachos's leaving and is upset.
Athena again pleads to Zeus for Odysseus's release. Zeus sends

Summary Of Steinbeck's "Of Mice And Men" With Background About Steinbeck
.... and they could get a job there. George told Lennie that if
he would get into trouble at the ranch, that he should come back and hide
in the bush. Sunrise had came and the two men began their walk to the
ranch. When George and Lennie arrived, they saw a huge long rectangular
building where the bunks were inside, the walls were white and the floor
was wood. The old swamper showed Lennie and George to their assigned bunks.
While George and Lennie were getting settled in, a stocky man stood

Of Mice And Men: A Review
.... more animal-like as well. The death of the mouse, puppy, and
Curly's wife all help to foreshadow the death of Lennie.
When George finds out that Lennie has killed Curly's wife he knows
that Curly will seek revenge. George alone finds Lennie in the brush and
assures him that he is not upset about what he did. With Lennie's back
turned, George tells him about their dream one last time. He shoots Lennie
in the back of the head in the same manner Candy's dog was shot and with
the same gun. "He never knew what hit him". However, George was able to
shoot Lennie because he did not want to see him killed by Curly while Candy

Summary Of "Of Mice And Men"
.... shack and an acre of land that they can
call their own and to live of the "fat of the land' and Lennie wanted to
rasie rabbits. This telling of the their dream was greatly loved by Lennie..
especially and only when George told it to him (altough he knew it word
from word). George also blames his current situation of down and out luck
on Lennie because he has to always keep a look out on his behalf. Knowing
that there was a great possibility that something like the incident in Weed
would happen in the new ranch, George tells Lennie to run like the wind and
return to this place near the water and hide in the bushes for George to
come .....

A Farewell To Arms
.... it. Henry also is
accompanied by Catherine during nights at the Ospidale Maggoire. To Henry
there "was almost no difference in the night except that is was an even
better time" with Catherine. Catherine, who is already a code hero, has
values which transcend onto Henry at the Hospital. During the day, Henry
sleeps but Catherine has to work, so she stops coming to him on nights.
Henry is left to stay up, alone on nights. Also, he does not ask Catherine
to come stay with him thus controlling his desires to make love to her.
