Beloved soon ends up staying with the family for months. Mysteriously Paul D leaves the house. Beloved becomes strongly attached to Sethe. Soon peculiar things start to occur. Things such as Beloved humming the exact tune that Sethe made up and had sung to her children and only they knew it. Things such as Beloved asking Sethe about her earings. Foreshadowing
.... forshadowing can add to a story can clue the reader in on what will happen to the characters. A good example from O’Conners story is when she is describing what the grandmother is wearing then adds this line, “In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady” (pg. 355). One might assume that the family would have an accident while on their trip. On the other hand the reader could think that one or more of the other characters would die. At the end of the short story the reader finds out that both of these do infect come true.
O’Conners does not stop with just these forshadowin .....

The Iliad
.... his daughter, Chrysies, back. Agamemnon ignored his pleas and sent him away. Chryses left and went down to the ocean and prayed to Apollo to avenge his tears. Apollo heard his prayer and, furious, came down from Mt. Olympus. He sat upon a hill and started to attack the Grecians with his arrows. This went on for nine days straight.
On the tenth day Achilles called all the Kings and Princes into assembly. He asked if any of them had done anything to offend the god Apollo. The only one that spoke was Calchas, a man who knew of the past, present, and future. He said that King Agamemnon had dishonored Apollo's priest. He also told the .....

Zeus’ Authoritative Determination
.... Briseis, and makes an example of Achilles so that, “another man may shrink back/ from likening himself to me and contending against me” ( 1. 186-7). At this point Achilles’ heart is filled with menis (divine anger or wrath), and he vows to punish all of the Achains. This total anger is part of Zeus’ plan to balance out the pride and power between these two men, and puts them in their appropriate places, far beneath the gods.
Another purpose for Achilles’ menis is to fulfill the prophecy that his “life must be brief and bitter beyond all men’s,” indirectly leading to the Achian victory (1. 417-18). Achilles knows that he is .....

Metaphors, Exaggeration, And Alliteration In Beowulf
.... and we would learn less about him. Anybody would say that describing or referring to a person by his or her name over and over again is boring. So the use of kennings and metaphors is very important in this long epic poem.
Exaggeration is another device to make Beowulf a more interesting, entertaining, and dramatic poem. For example, even though this story is a fantasy, it is hard to believe that the character of Beowulf would be able to kill a monster like Grendel with his bare hands. Exaggerating Beowulf's bravery makes the story more exciting. Another exaggeration used to convince us how great our hero is, is the passage, .....

Types Of Learning
.... just look at your watch, know that you’re hungry and start to salivate. Without seeing any food. This is classical conditioning. There is a way to reverse this but it is quite extensive.
Observable learning is a very good way to learn for many people. Have you ever been sitting in a class and been stuck on an assignment. What many people do after this is look around and see what others are doing. This is observable learning. Experiential learning is the kind of learning where you are in the field. This gives meaning to instructions and readings. This is very helpful especially with many hands on activities.

Humiliation For Humbleness?
.... if he or she is guilty, the citizens of this country cannot stand for this kind of punishment. This type of punishment is believed to be barbaric. We are civilized and mature, we are able to correct these criminals with other non-violent processes. "We now practice a more enlightened, more humane way of disciplining wrongdoers: We lock them up in cages."
Jacoby says "Imprisonment has become our penalty of choice for almost every offense in the criminal code." Yes, why is that? Can living in a barred cell in a correctional institute actually discipline someone? Many believe that it truly works. The prisoner will have ti .....

Winter
.... upon me. From afar I heard the faint whisper of car engines driving slowly on the slippery roads. The silence of the fields immediately surrounding me was broken with the roaring of snowmobiles making trails and children’s laughter as their sleds neared where I was standing. The laughter ceased as the sleds came to a halt visible through the barren trees ahead of me. The kids picked themselves up and trudged up the hill, their feet crunching below them disturbing the clean lines of newly fallen snow.
I took a step forward and realized the many wonderful things of the winter season that I could experience. In just that mo .....

Different Ideologies And What I Believe In
.... and the judge purposefully gave him just probation knowing that he would smoke and still grow weed.
When asking me "What do you believe in," I found it pretty hard to narrow down my strongest beliefs. I think my parents did a fantastic job of raising me and showing me how to get along with everybody regardless of what they look like, or who they like. My parents have a very simple belief like I do. I am a very chilled and laid back kind of person. If you do what you have to do, and I do what I have to do, then we will get along great. That is why I bring up the fact about gay rights. My belief in gay rights is short an .....

"To Build A Fire"
.... the man sits down for lunch, removes his mittens and unzipped his jacket. "The action consumed no more than a quater of a minute, yet in that brief moment the numbness laid hold of the exposed fingers" (p.227). Then the man strikes his fingers against his leg and is immediately met with a sharp pain. He then places his fingers back in the mitten and removes his other hand to finish his lunch. Patriarchy In 1001 Nights And A Midsummer Night’s Dream
.... patriarchal social structure in the land, is really held by a female; however, in most of these stories, the female wielding the power is usually using that social power for evil against the underdog daughter.
In 1001 Nights, the original power rested with the king of the land, since he was the one with the ability to choose which young virgins he was going to wed and kill. The women were clearly in the submissive role, until Shaherazad was able to, through her stories, slowly reverse the role of power so that the king no longer marries for a night, then kills them the next day. The framed narrative in this story is c .....
