He wanders around places he has never been, trying to figure out how to not stand out, how to “fit in”. He faces new problems and fears with each passing day. He gave insight into something that most of us would never be able to imagine experiencing. The author was raised in Texas a prejudice state. So it made his task even harder.

A Heritage Denied

The Functions Of Setting In “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place”

.... money. C.D. lived with the Firemen most of the time, he also as a fireman did not make that much money. The contrast of the living styles helps out with the reader and viewers point of views because most people who are "ugly" can still do very well in life in terms of opposite sex relations if they have good jobs and lots of money. C.D. and Cyrano did not make lots of money and were not thought of as upper class people. Both men had to try to impress the woman that they were trying to get by flattering her with their words and not really by their actions.

Henry James use of symbolism in The Turn of the Screw seems to be the easiest way to sway the reader’s opinion toward the psychological theory.
