.... Tom felt that his "romance with the woman on the roof was safe and intact" (706). What romance? Tom has based his opinion on fantasy rather than reality. Fantasizing "himself at work on the crane, adjusting the arm to swing over and pick her up and swing her back across the sky to drop her near him" (704) illustrates that Tom is out of touch with reality. Go Ask Alice
.... a young child while she was high. She could have killed that young infant because of her stupidity and that really annoys me.
The part of this book that was particularly effective was when I saw how drugs led Alice into a mental hospital. When I heard that she was high and started ripping out her hair and going nuts that scared me to death. This part of the book was very scary but also it was very interesting.
If I were Alice, when I was thinking about using drugs again like she was, I would have gotten information about them first. I would have asked people who used drugs at one time what it was like and was it worth it. Then .....

The Lottery: Theme And Irony
.... stoning another person but when she found out she was to be stoned she threw a fit. Tessie could not wait to go to the drawing. It was a major event and tradition in their village and many other villages. When Tessie remembered it was the twenty-seventh she ran to the village. Ironically she was running to her death.
The theme of “The Lottery” is that people do not care when something does not, immediately or personally, affect them. In both of these books, 1984 and The Handmaid’s Tale, the main characters know that the controlled lifestyle that they are living is wrong. At the beginning, they think that this is the way they have to live, and accept things the way they are. As we read further into the books, we soon realize that the characters want to make a difference and change their lives. The Yellow Wallpaper: Male Oppression
.... window symbolizes a view of hope. In this story though, the window has bars on it, symbolizing imprisonment or oppression.
An additional symbol of the narrator’s oppression is her husband, John. He is considered to be “a physician of high standing” (p.630). This along with the fact that he is her husband makes any opposition from the narrator seemingly impossible. To make matters worse, John treats the narrator not as his wife, but more as a helpless child. The narrator eventually acts childlike when she states, “Nobody would believe what an effort it is to do what little I am able,- to dress and entertain, and order things” ( .....

.... realism, which allows the reader to go beyond the normal story and expand their imagination. When Tita grows up she falls in love with man named Pedro. On the eve of his wedding night to Tita’s sister, Tita bakes the cake and tears fall into the batter. At the reception the next day, all those who eat the cake breakout into tears of sadness as a reflection of Tita’s jealousy, sadness, and bitterness.
Magical realism is a wonderful way of letting the reader expand his or her imagination beyond fact. It brings reverie to a serious tale. In The Handsomest Drowned Man, the magic in the scenario adds depth to the characters .....

Tom Robinson was found guilty of raping Mayella Ewell, in the face of very strong evidence that his accusers were lying. One reason why he was convicted was because it was a white man’s word against a black man’s one. Tom, who is black, would be denied justice because of this. Atticus reinforces this idea when he tells Jem ‘in our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins.’ Generally this was the mentality of most Americans at the time. Aspects Of The Narrator In Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Black Cat”
.... because this downfall is so very relevant to many of our own society problems, the story takes on an eerie, human reality twist. Slowly, over time, his personality alters from once a loving, caring, and nurturing man, into a mad, spontaneous killer. It is while the narrator is intoxicated that he inflicts the cruelest acts of violence on his cat because “…the fury of the demon [alcohol] instantly possessed [him]” (Poe 894).
From the alcohol, perverseness provides the rational for otherwise unjustifiable acts, such as killing the first cat, and yet at times the narrator feels quick and minute pangs of guilt.
