The lines "It's sundown in the camp; some youngster laughs, / Lifting his mug and drinking health to all / Who came unscathed from that unpitying waste:- / (Terror and ruin lurk behind his gaze.)" are deeply touching, a man tries to hide his fear behind a facade of bravado, but it is all too clear in his face. The words "unpitying waste", used to describe the indiscriminate slaughter they were part of also seems to imply that the author viewed the deaths as a waste and of no purpose.
In the last stanza, the poem points out that war causes everyone .....

.... of World War I. As soldiers they know not what awaits them on the battle field. Many of their comrades will die before their very eyes. And for what? They don't know what their fighting against, they're fighting a war that isn't their own. But rather the war of the political leaders of several countries, whose arrogance cost the lives of so many young men. A war can never be fully justified, how do you justify the loss of human life? They know nothing of life but despair, death, and fatuous superficiality cast over an abyss of sorrow. The war has destroyed them, before they had a chance to live.

The idea of self-discovery does not only include Nora, but Christine in Ibsen's play. Christine also plays an important role in conforming to society's beliefs. She accommodates all the ideas and pressures of society with ideas such as marriage, careers, and children. To the people of this era, marriage was a must for survival, careers for women were rare and children were greatly encouraged. Christine tries so hard to "fit in" to the beliefs and will of the society, and is, however unsuccessful. .....
