Good Versus Evil: Wars In A Separate Peace
.... at the start of the novel or are they
mortal enemies as Gene begins to hint with this quote at the point Gene
thinks Finny is finally going to "get away" with something he did. "This
time he wasn't going to get away with it. I could feel myself becoming
unexpectedly excited at that."(page 20) This shows us that even though
they are friends, Gene feels that Finny is too perfect and he needs to see
a sign that he is human, that he is not the super-popular "benevolent" kid
everyone else thinks he is. "He had gotten away with everything. I felt a
sudden stab of disappointment."(page 21) Finny, like usual had finally
gotten himsel .....

Summary Of "The Grapes Of Wrath"
.... they had the lower they could make their prices.
The number of handbills sent out far out numbered the number of jobs
available. Many people in the dust bowl were constructing a view of
California that was devastatingly false. However most of the people had to
go somewhere, and all they knew was agriculture, so the natural thing was
to go to the only place in the country at that time that was in pe ak
agricultural condition. This was all true in the case of the Joads. They
had no experience with any other kind of lifestyle. They were farmers and
they thought that was what they would remain. What they became was job
hunters, s .....

An Analysis Of "The Grapes Of Wrath"
.... There are several uses of symbols in the novel from the
turtle at the beginning to the rain at the end. As each symbol is
presented through the novel they show examples of the good and the bad
things that exist within the novel.
The opening chapter paints a vivid picture of the situation facing
the drought-stricken farmers of Oklahoma. Dust is described a covering
everything, smothering the life out of anything that wants to grow. The
dust is symbolic of the erosion of the lives of the people. The dust is
synonymous with "deadness". The land is ruined ^way of life (farming) gone,
people ^uprooted and forced to leave. Seco .....

Great Expectations: Pip's Personality Change
.... was treated by Estella, he went on loving
her only because of her astounding beauty.
As Pip progressed in life, he became increasingly ungrateful to the
people that had raised and cared for him as a child. His disrespect was
most strongly shown towards Joe. Having not seen Joe for a number of years,
Pip shows that he would rather have continued his now prosperous life
without having anything to do with Joe, when he thinks, "Let me confess
with what feeling I looked forward to Joe's coming... Not with pleasure
though I was bound to him by so many ties; no, with considerable
disturbance and some mortification." (p 630) Despite .....

John Gardner's "Grendel": Good Vs. Evil
.... about the whole situation.
Like animals they are frightened of anything that is different from what
they are used to. When Grendel attempts to communicate they show their
ignorance and simple-mindedness. Instead of taking the time to understand
the anomaly in their world they panic and decide to destroy it. Without
being able to view the story from Grendel's point of view the reader might
assume that the humans had every right to attack. Another example of the
same type of simple-mindedness is their second premature attack on Grendel.
After hearing the shaper's words Grendel weeps, "'Mercy! Peac e!'"(ch.4,
pp.50) in the hope .....

Guilt And How It Is Handled
.... but also in daily life.
A famous case is the O.J. Simpson murder trial. Whether he committed the
crime or not, O.J. has shown no signs of guilt. This can be interpreted as
meaning that he either did not commit the crime, or he did so but is hiding
the guilt. If the second situation is true, then he has emotional scars
that do not show exactly like Dimmesdale. A more common example takes
place in schools. Sometimes a student will cheat on a test, but not be
able to feel a sense of accomplishment about the grade. Guilt has overcome
this student and made it difficult to enjoy the success of a good grade
because it was obt .....
