The maturing of Achilles from a bloodthirsty warrior to a more reserved and thoughtful man was the focal point in Homers Illiad. The opening line in Book 1 summarizes the attitude of Peleus Achilles towards war and man. “Rage---Goddess, sing the rage of Peleus’ son Achilles, murderous, doomed, that cost the Achaeans countless losses, hurling down to the House of Death so many sturdy souls, great fighters’ souls, but made their bodies carrion, feast for the dogs and birds…”
