In the last two decades studies on the correlates of attitudes toward abortion have proliferated (Hertel, et al., 1974; Renzi, 1975; Granberg, 1978; McIntosh, et al., 1979; D'Antonio and Stack, 1980; Benin, 1985; Harris and Mills, 1985; McCutcheon, 1987; Jelen, 1988). Although these studies have clarified which variables are related to attitudes toward abortion, the reasons for these relationships have been largely left unexplained.
